Kriegler Farms is investing in popular new grape varieties

We are currently in the process of renewing old vineyards and replanting on the farm with popular new varieties. Vineyard renewal represents a considerable investment and is a good indicator of the grower confidence of the future of the variety that is being planted. We have confidence in the new improved varieties that we have selected for planting and this year we are planting 15 hectars of Autumn Crisp (SunWorld), Arra 15 (Arra) and Timco (SNFL).

Kriegler Farms makes use of Miatech technology in two areas during the harvest and dispatch process. The Aquaroom 4S humidification system in the holding room increases the relative humidity to 95% and has a marked positive effect on the quality and condition of the grapes. In the farm’s refrigerated delivery truck the Bio Turbo 100i eliminates ethylene gas and airborne pathogens. Johan Kriegler, CEO of Kriegler Farms recently reported to Freshplaza online magazine that these technologies have proved highly successful and have significantly reduced the company’s post harvest quality problems.

Good weather conditions during the development and ripening period has resulted in a generous and healthy crop. Our earliest grapes are currently approaching optimal ripeness, helped along by the ideal hot summer days. This is a sample of our bountiful Sugraone crop ripening.

Kriegler Farms has been harvesting and packaging grapes for almost a month now and the harvest is proceeding well. We have completed the harvest on our earliest varieties and are now proceeding to the mid-season varieties.

Amazing brainz launch guests

On Tuesday 20 October 2015 Kleinberg Kriegler Farms, in conjunction with The Muñoz Foundation, officially opened the AmazingBrainz project at Kleinberg Kriegler Farm in the Hex River Valley. Is it possible to recycle compact discs and conserve birdlife with one action? Yes, indeed! We have hung our old cd’s in the wind above our vineyards where they work brilliantly as bird scarers. As the discs flap and twist in the wind, the flashing effect keeps the birds away from our grapes. This protects both the grapes and the birds as it prevents the need to use harsher methods to combat the birds. Simple, recycling, enviro – friendly and effective.

Kriegler Farms farm workers having great fun playing netball!

Colors Foundation Family Development programme sport programme

On the 12th of September there was great excitement and anticipation on Kriegler Farms before the start of the first netball game between the two teams on the farm. This forms part of the Colors Foundation Family Development initiative currently underway on the farm.  The beautiful spring day was perfect, windless day for the game. The two newly assembled teams consisted of resident farm workers and named after the two housing villages on the Farms, Witsupply and Vuilgesig.  The teams met on the newly marked netball field with recently erected goal hoops and they certainly had a great deal of fun!

Alet Coetzee, Colors Foundation co-ordinator for the implementation of the Programme was the referee. The rest of the farm workers turned up to watch the event and after some strenuous play and much high volume crowd support, when the final whistle blew the score was Witsupply 14 – Vuilgesig 9.  What the players lacked in fitness they made up for with enthusiasm and it seems clear that this is the start of a new sporting tradition at Kriegler Farms.

The grape crop in our vineyards is currently developing well. The grape flowering process has ended successfully without disturbance from the weather and this has resulted in a very good potential yield on the vines. We are currently performing the necessary procedures to optimise the harvest which is stet to commence by the end of December.

Prior to the start of the winter we installed 60 solar hot water heaters on the homes of our permanent workers. This has replaced the electrical geysers so in effect it reduces our carbon footprint and saves  the workers the electrical running cost. During the winter months temperatures plummet and the Hex River Mountains are covered in snow so the warm water and cost saving has kept our people snug and smiling through this time.

We have ordered and will soon take delivery of a new, larger refrigerated truck. As we deliver to our receiver’s Distribution Center daily during the harvest season, this will allow us to increase and secure our delivery capacity to our discerning receiver.
